Fatigued Driver Truck Accidents in Southeast Texas
Beaumont Truck Accident Attorneys
Heavy commercial trucks and 18-wheelers are the behemoths of the road. They can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and take 70 to 80 feet to come to a full stop. They are more difficult to maneuver and take more driving skill than smaller vehicles which is why truckers must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). When they do collide with smaller vehicles, they can inflict life-threatening damage or death to those they hit while the trucker often walks away unharmed.
Because of the threat an out-of-control truck can cause to other drivers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has enacted rules to prevent trucker fatigue. A fatigued trucker will generally have a slower reaction time and may lack the ability to make split-second life-saving decisions. Holding truckers and the trucking companies accountable when these rules are violated is a major concern at Dugas Law Firm. Our Beaumont truck accident lawyers will pursue your claim relentlessly in the wake of a fatigued trucker violation.
If you or anyone in your family has been harmed by a fatigued truck driver, get the legal assistance you need. Call a Beaumont personal injury lawyer at (409) 226-0990 as soon as possible.
How Long Can Truck Drivers Drive Per Day?
A fatigued trucker may suffer from simple lack of sleep or from being on the road for too many hours. He or she may be operating under the pressure of meeting deadlines and break the rules that were enacted for everyone’s safety.
These rules include the following guidelines:
- Drivers are allowed to drive for only 11 hours straight after taking off for 10 consecutive hours
- After starting their route, they are not allowed to drive after 14 hours
- They are not allowed to drive more than 60 hours in 1 week
- They are not allowed to drive more than 70 hours in 8 days
Logbooks are required to be kept by truckers and can easily be verified for their accuracy or falseness, making them a critical piece of evidence. In all truck crash cases, our firm will act quickly to investigate and document all aspects of the incident to establish why and how it occurred and pinpoint all parties responsible.
