A chameleon carrier is a company that operates under multiple names and/or DOT numbers in order to avoid compliance with federal motor carrier safety regulations. To exclude chameleon carriers, the following must be verified:
- The company’s name and address.
- The company’s DOT number.
- The company’s operating authority.
- The company’s insurance coverage.
- The company’s safety rating.
- The company’s driver qualifications.
- The company’s vehicle maintenance records.
- The company’s driver logs.
- The company’s drug and alcohol testing records.
- The company’s hazardous materials safety records.
